Mary Kingsley's Pith Helmet
In 1894, after a brief return to England, Kingsley returned to explore West Africa in earnest, and became the first European to visit parts of Gabon, on a steamboat journey down the Ogooué River. Ever the proper Englishwoman in dress and manner, she refused to wear trousers while hiking through the wilderness. Once, when she fell into a game pit, her billowing skirt broke her fall onto pointed wooden spikes, saving her life. On other occasions, she drove away a hippo by smacking it with her umbrella, and beaned a prowling leopard with a well-aimed cooking pot.
